Storyboard
Making my storyboard was a fun but challenging experience. It made me open my eyes and realize just how difficult it is to bring a whole magazine together. All that I was required to do was four pages which was time-consuming enough, so it is hard to imagine doing it for an entire fifty plus page magazine. Something that was difficult for me was planning out my time to do my storyboard. In the article Filmmaking across the curriculum: a beginner's guide it tells you to allocate lots of time to the project, and then some more, as it always takes longer than you think (O’Brien, 2005.) This could not have been more accurate as it took much longer than planned. One element I enjoyed was figuring out the format of the feature article. Using the thirds that the paper was sectioned into really helped me look at creating the magazine from a very raw and editor-like point of view. In the second article mentioned it says that storyboarding is flexible. It is comprehensive. And it allows a group to generate a lot of ideas. Its only major drawback is that it takes a lot of time. In contrast to brainstorming, which is best used with a narrowly defined problem, storyboarding is ideal for solving complex problems - not only for providing solutions, but also for defining different aspects of a problem (Higgins, 1995.) This perfectly defines the storyboarding experience for me. It took much longer than expected but allowed me to pick out the flaws from my Preliminary layout.
